CBD oil, also known as THC-free cannabis oil, is an all-natural product. It consists of a plant oil or fat, usually hemp seed or coconut oil extract, to which CBD is added to enrich it. Both ingredients are 100% natural.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil, as the name suggests, is an oil-based product that contains CBD in varying percentages. So-called cannabidiol or CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis flowers, which has many benefits.

The vast majority of CBD oil products contain only two ingredients: a plant oil that serves as the base of the product and a CBD-rich cannabis flower extract. The former is usually hemp seed oil, or coconut MCT oil. The bud extract, depending on whether it’s filtered or unfiltered, or whether it contains THC, will yield one kind of CBD oil or another.

Types of CBD oil

Broad spectrum CBD oil is a type of oil that’s unique in that it doesn’t contain any THC, not even the legally permitted 0.2%. It retains all of the plant’s active principles, such as terpenes and cannabinoids, with the exception of THC.

Full spectrum CBD oil, on the other hand, does retain that natural percentage of THC from hemp (limited to 0.2%), along with the plant’s terpenes and cannabinoids.

Lastly, raw CBD oil, or pure CBD oil, retains the highest degree of purity, as the flower extract it contains isn’t filtered. In this product, unlike the ones previously mentioned, the base used is coconut MCT oil to which raw CBD extract is added. This retains all the plant’s components, including waxes and resins, so the aroma is more herbal and slightly bitter. This type of oil is usually recommended for those who already have some experience with CBD oils.

Uses of CBD oil

CBD oil is a product that has been credited with a number of benefits. Thanks to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, it can help to treat muscle and joint pain resulting from intense sports activities. It can also help you to fall asleep or to combat anxiety in stressful situations, thanks to its anxiolytic properties.

CBD can also help treat the symptoms of some diseases. However, as this kind of product isn’t aimed at diagnosing, treating, or curing any disease, we recommend consulting a doctor on a case-by-case basis and following the recommendations of your medical specialist. 

How does CBD oil work?

CBD oil works through our endocannabinoid system, which was discovered over 30 years ago, during the 1990s. This is a system made up of endogenous cannabinoid receptors, which are located in the brain and throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. All mammals have it.

This means, in a nutshell, that they have a system in their body that allows them to interact with and feel the effects of cannabinoids. These can be endogenous, such as anandamide, which is produced by the body itself, or exogenous, such as CBD produced by the cannabis plant in its flowers.

The endocannabinoid system is involved in a wide range of metabolic processes, with its main function being the maintenance of the body’s homoeostasis.

In other words, its primary task is to properly regulate the body’s ability to maintain and stabilise its internal conditions, keeping it in balance with the environment.

How is CBD oil consumed?

A few years ago, when the CBD boom started, it was common to see dietary supplements containing CBD in various types of retailers such as herbal shops, grow shops, and other places. CBD oil was also sold to be ingested.

Until 2018, CBD could be sold in Spain as a dietary supplement. Its use had always been oral or sublingual, the form in which it is most effective.

However, following a series of legal changes, CBD oil can no longer be sold as a dietary supplement in Spain. In other countries in Europe and America, CBD oil can be purchased as a dietary supplement. In Spain, however, it can only be sold for topical use.

This is because, although its base is an edible plant oil, CBD enrichment makes it no longer legally suitable to be sold as a dietary supplement.
