CBD resins, or THC-free cannabis resins, are extracts of hemp flowers that contain CBD with high concentrations. Depending on the extraction or processing method used, we can obtain either hash, charas, or pollen. These extracts are very similar to each other, varying slightly in aroma and appearance.
CBD resins, as hemp flower extract, are completely natural, as they are obtained through traditional mechanical processes. In other words, this a product completely free of any harmful chemicals, because the only ingredient used for its production is CBD-rich flowers.
Traditional methods of cannabis resin extraction have remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Recently, new, more industrial extraction techniques have emerged, although the old ones are still used, as they produce an excellent end product.
Traditionally, hemp was grown for fibre and seeds, so little importance was attached to the flowers. However, the rise in popularity of CBD has seen hemp buds become more appreciated. It’s precisely this part of the plant that produces the resin, which is rich in CBD.
Marijuana growers, meanwhile, were traditionally concerned with obtaining flowers with a strong aroma and high cannabinoid content. As the benefits of CBD began to become more widespread, the need arose to research new ways of growing hemp.
That is to say, since there was now a need to produce abundant flowers that were also highly aromatic and high in cannabinoids, hemp growing evolved to meet this need.
Many breeders and growers have worked on obtaining hemp flowers that are similar to traditional marijuana in aroma and appearance, but with low THC levels and high CBD content.
Thanks to these new ways of growing hemp, very aromatic and fragrant resins can be obtained. Both CBD and terpenes are produced in specialised structures called glandular trichomes. These are mostly found on the flowers of female cannabis plants.
The amount of these trichomes will determine the level of CBD and terpenes in a plant. In other words, the more resin-producing glands the flowers have, the higher the CBD content and the more aromatic they will be.
There are several ways to separate the resin from the flowers. Primarily, there are two types of extraction methods: mechanical and chemical. Mechanical methods are those that separate the resin through procedures that don’t alter the original composition of the resin. They usually consist of impacting, rubbing, or cooling the flowers, so that the trichomes are separated from them.
Chemical methods, on the other hand, consist of mixing the buds with chemical substances capable of dissolving the resin. Once a solution containing CBD and terpenes is obtained, they’re separated so that these added substances are eliminated.
Although both ways of obtaining resin are very effective, the second way is slightly more dangerous for resin producers, who often work with flammable gases. In addition, these methods must be carried out carefully to ensure a product free of harmful chemicals.
CBD pollen or dry hash is a type of cannabis resin or extraction that’s high in CBD and very rich in terpenes. It’s a kind of resin paste very similar to traditional hashish, with rather light shades ranging from yellow to brown and sometimes even green.
It’s a very aromatic type of resin, which is extracted through a dry sift by gently sieving the flowers. This means that the CBD-rich hemp buds are placed on a very fine mesh screen (measured in microns) which is moved so that the flowers vibrate and are lightly impacted. The aim is for the trichomes to pass through these mesh screens, but not the plant matter, thereby separating the resin from the flowers.
As you can see, this is a method that doesn’t require any extra ingredients because the resin is separated from the flowers using a sieve, which slowly filters it. This paste, which is known as CBD pollen or dry hash with CBD, is obtained only after the hemp flowers have received the appropriate treatment.
A special feature of this method is that the flowers are dried before being subjected to this process. In addition, they’re also sometimes refrigerated beforehand in a fridge to facilitate the separation of the trichomes, as the cold helps them to become detached.
Bubble hash or water hash is a type of resin that is extracted by using water to separate the resin from the flower. Cannabis resin is not water-soluble, i.e. it doesn’t dissolve in water. It therefore acts as a mechanical separator by separating the trichomes from the flower.
As with dry sieved hashish, this type of resin is obtained by using mesh screens that act as a sieve, preventing plant matter from mixing with the resin.
Essentially, several mesh screens are placed over a container and a mixture of water, ice, and hemp flowers is poured over them. The water and resin are filtered so that the liquid is caught in the container and the resin is collected between the mesh screens, with the flowers remaining on top.
The resin is then dried and pressed to form a dark brown aromatic paste, which is the final product. To obtain CBD hash in this way, it’s usually necessary to dry the flowers beforehand.
Charas is the name given to hashish traditionally made in India and Pakistan. It’s different from the others mentioned above in that it’s made from the fresh plant, i.e. the flowers aren’t dried.
Traditionally, charas was made by hand, rubbing the fresh buds in this way until a good layer of resin was built up. Today, charas with CBD is still made using this method, so it’s an excellent quality resin obtained by hand and in a completely organic way.
By using the best quality, highly aromatic hemp flowers with large amounts of resin, the resulting product retains the ancient flavours of the best resins from India, Nepal, and Pakistan.
CBD resins are an extract of cannabis flowers with generally high CBD levels. Essentially, they’re a kind of CBD concentrate, containing the glands that produce CBD separated from the plant matter that makes up the flower.
It’s a product very similar to traditional hashish, but without any psychotropic properties. This is because hemp flowers with legally permitted THC levels are used to obtain CBD resin.
CBD resins are obtained by separating the trichomes from the flowers. These are small glands found in the flowers of female plants, where CBD and terpenes are produced.
There are mainly two types of methods to separate the resin glands from the buds, mechanical and chemical methods. They essentially differ in that in mechanical extraction the resin is separated from the flowers without using any chemicals, while solvents are used in chemical extraction.
Mechanical resin extraction methods are the most traditional, so there are many ways to separate the resin from the flowers in this way. However, the most common are dry extraction, water extraction, and manual extraction of fresh resin.
These extraction methods result in different end products with different names. Dry extraction yields pollen or dry shift hash with CBD; water extraction yields bubble hash or water hash with CBD, and lastly, charas, which is obtained manually from fresh plant matter
